The Switch 2 is almost here: finally, we have the rest of the details.

Nintendo/Jeffrey Hazelwood/CNET

The successor to the 8-year-old Nintendo Switch will arrive June 5 for $450 (£395, AU$699). The Switch 2's details were announced Wednesday via Nintendo's video Direct presentation.

The Switch 2 features a larger display than the original Switch. Its 7.9-inch LCD will have 1080p resolution, double the pixels of the original, plus it will support HDR and up to 120 frames per second. When docked, the Switch 2 will support 4K at 60fps. Its new Joy-Cons are magnetic, with bigger analog sticks and will work like a mouse. For storage, the Switch 2 will come with 256GB, a big jump from the first Switch. The Switch 2 will continue to support extra storage, but only the microSD Express card, not the original cards used on the first Switch.

Other upgrades coming with the Switch 2 are improved speakers for better audio and a built-in mic to make use of the new chat features with the console. The console also has a new C button that will be used to connect with other players with voice chat and video chat with a camera sold separately.

The Switch 2 also has plenty of third-party support. Games such as Elden Ring, Split Fiction, Hogwarts Legacy and Madden are coming to the new console.

Nintendo spilled the first details of the Switch 2 via a short trailer back in January, revealing the system's design but little else. We now know how the Switch 2 plays games, and what makes it different from the Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED systems that were previously sold.

CNET has been tracking the expected features of the Switch 2, which you can refer to against the details Nintendo is revealing now. For more, follow CNET's Switch 2 live blog with news and analysis from the latest Nintendo Direct.
